Brief Notes on Tsuen Wan District
Tsuen Wan has grown from a small fishing community along the Rambler Channel into an urbanised district which has a population of over 270,000. Rapid growth started in the 1950's when the district benefitted from the settlement of a large number of industrialists from mainland China who set up factories in Tsuen Wan. Along with Kwai Chung, Tsuen Wan was the first "new
With the town" to be developed by Government. Mass Transit Railway terminating in Tsuen Wan, the district has become an economic and transport hub of the western New Territories region. The District also boasts the largest hotel in Hong Kong with over 1000 rooms.
Approximately one-third of the population live in public housing, and a healthy demand for private housing has given the incentives for the private sector to develop a significant number of private estates. A considerable amount of reclamation has taken place along the waterfront and more is being planned to cater for future
commercial/residential developments. Due to rapid urbanization, traditional communities
have been uprooted,
