Secretary of State's visit to Hong Kong

Earlier today I sent you a copy of my minute about the Secretary of State's visit to Manila, Hong Kong and Malaya/ Singapore at the end of July. As far as the Philippine Government are concerned, and virtually everyone else, except you and the Governor of Hong Kong, the Secretary of State will leave the meeting with the ASEAN and other Foreign Ministers early, that is late on the evening of Saturday 25 July, because he wants to consult the Governor in Hong Kong at length the next day. In fact, the Secretary of State wants half a day off, to walk Lantau with his son, Alexander, who works for Hutchinsons in Hong Kong. Alexander's telephone number is 852 (although I think that is the code for Hong Kong) 828 322. The Secretary of State would be grateful if someone in the loop (perhaps the Governor's Private Secretary?) could establish contact with Alexander and say that his father hopes to get to Hong Kong late on the Saturday. Failing that he will get there as quickly as possible on the Sunday morning. Just how they get to Lantau and spend the time there, is a matter for Alexander, in consultation with the Governor's office. I think it makes more sense to ask the Governor's office to do this from the outset than for us to do so from Private Office.

The Secretary of State does not need a full day with Alexander but we should aim for five hours. Few people would be involved with the trip to Lantau - probably just myself and a detective, although possibly Francis Cornish and Debbie Aliaga, one of our PAs, as well
