Questions came up during Mr Needham's recent visit, eg

(a)

Would major British companies be

interested in leading the way, by investing in market-oriented research with a commitment to buying the product, thereby demonstrating their loyalty to and faith in Hong Kong? The

question was put to Cable & Wireless and their

answer was a clear yes.

(b)

Would the Hong Kong Government be interested in British commercial involvement? Initial enquiries suggest they would, but the officials are cautious and aware of their lack of practical experience. Wisely, they know the risks of drowning good ideas in Government cash.

(c)

Is the local situation ripe? Probably yes again. British consultants have been commissioned by the Hong Kong Government to advise on the setting up of a Science Park. This is an area where we British have

considerable experience.

The British Council has carved out a role for itself, knows the local people, and recently introduced CEST (the London- based Centre for the Exploitation of Science and Technology) who could act as advisers and a model for what could be done

CEST in Hong Kong to bring business and academics together. has made some proposals. Most, if not all, the British companies on the CEST Board have important Hong Kong/China

interests.
