MR GOODLAD'S MEETING WITH DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENTS, 19 MAY
(3 PM)
My first overseas visit since joining the Foreign Office team of Ministers in April. A major issue in my area of responsibility. Have already met many visitors from Hong Kong in London. Now time for first hand impressions.
Not my first visit to Hong Kong. Already know the territory well, and look forward to meeting old friends.
- Aim will be to update myself, and meet as wide a range of people as possible, both inside and outside the government, including local politicians, businessmen and local community
leaders like the District Board Chairman.
I shall want to find out what issues matter most to the
people of Hong Kong. Looking to get a personal feel for the range of views on the major issues we will be tackling in coming months. In particular whole complex of issues associated with 1995 elections to Legislative Council
Know law and order a matter of great concern. I intend to
spend some time with the police. And I shall be visiting a community in the New Territories, where I shall visit a
local school and talk to the people there.
- Also a Vietnamese Camp. An issue which I know from previous visits, and where real progress being made.
Following our election victory, continuity in Hong Kong policy. Embarking on the last five years. A high priority for Prime Minister and Secretary of State as appointment
of Mr Patten shows. I intend to be closely involved: great
challenge.
