LAST PAPER

JAPAN BILATERALS, TOKYO: 26 JANUARY 1993

I thought I should let you have some indication of how the programmes for Sir Nigel Wicks and Ruth Thompson are proposed around the bilaterals on 26 January. These are attached along with an agenda (which is, of course, subject to amendment when the Japanese proposals are sent to Sir Nigel Wicks) and as they are very much first thoughts I should welcome your suggestions for the visits etc.

2. It is probably worth taking you through the programmes in order to ensure that we pick up on everything, including the more mundane arrangements.

SIR NIGEL WICKS' PROGRAMME

3. Sir Nigel is prefacing his visit to Japan with a day or two in Hong Kong to gain insight into the financial community there and the colony's problems. The programme as drafted has Sir Nigel leaving London on Wednesday 20 January on flight CX250 at 18.30 arriving in Hong Kong on Thursday 21 January at 14.45. I should be grateful if the British Trade Commission in Hong Kong, to whom I am copying this letter, would confirm whether Sir Nigel will be met and suggest where he might stay for the duration of his visit there.

4. Given that it does not appear that he will have much time on Thursday afternoon to undertake visits, would the BTC suggest, say, a working dinner for the evening to give Sir Nigel some background detail?

5. Sir Nigel would like to undertake meetings all day on Friday 22nd. I should be grateful for appropriate suggestions.

6.

Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 will be free.
