Opening remarks: Pleased to be back with you again. I much enjoyed attending the annual dinner of the British Chamber
in December, and it was kind of you and the Bulldogs to invite me to this splendid lunch today.
Hong Kong Economy
Want to set my remarks against a background that many of you will know intimately: the Hong Kong Economy generally, and more specifically the performance of British Companies in Hong Kong and Hong Kong Companies in the United Kingdom.

context in which we are making our decisions

Business is what makes Hong Kong tick; it has brought many
generations of British entrepreneurs out East. It is the
force that sustains this economic miracle and that has
begun to transform Southern China as well. I was able Saw
personally to see the extent of the transformation, during
H my visit to China in December. What I saw then impressed me
enormously and gave me great confidence about Hong Kong's future at the heart of one of the most dynamic regions on
earth.
Hong Kong Business Conference
I was reminded again of those strengths at the recent
business conference on Hong Kong at the Queen Elizabeth
Conference Centre in London. This was a first rate occasion which

wider British audience the fundamental soundness of the Hong
