1. There are close ties between Canada and Hong Kong. of Canada's total immigrants come from Hong Kong. There is therefore a large Hong Kong community living in Canada and a

great deal of money from Hong Kong has been invested in

Canada.

2.

The Canadians have been generally supportive of our policies on Hong Kong. They have adopted a package of discreet confidence promoting measures to contribute to a stable and prosperous Hong Kong post 1997. The measures are intended to protect long-term Canadian interests in Hong

Kong by supporting increased autonomy for Hong Kong after

1997.

1. The Secretary of State expects to have a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart in Munich.
