1.

The annual UK/Australia political talks will be held in London this year, on 21 May. Sir J Coles will chair the talks and will lead on the UK side. The visiting Australian team will be led by Peter Field, a Deputy Secretary in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Others attending will include Sir B Barder from Canberra, the Australian High Commissioner in London, and, possibly, FCO AUSs.

2. The purpose of this minute is to give you early notice of the talks and to seek your participation. A copy of the preliminary agenda is attached. This is a first draft which (minus timings), we have passed to the Australians for agreement.

The detail may

change, but the basic items are likely to remain the same. will see, the agenda items cover areas for which you are responsible.

As you

3. Sir J Coles and I would be grateful if you, or where this is not possible your deputies, could be available to attend the discussions to support the Chairman on those items which fall within your responsibilities, and if you would pencil the date into your diary. Once the agenda is confirmed - which we expect in the next week or so I will confirm the arrangements.
