I am delighted to hear that you are able to come to the next UK-Japan 2000 Group meeting which will be held just outside Tokyo on the weekend of March 5th-8th, 1992. I understand the venue will be a small island in Tokyo Bay.

The Hong Kong and South China issue will be one of the main items on our agenda and we have a provisional title for the subject which is "Hong Kong and South China in an Asian Pacific context".

This is a bit clumsy but it attempts to convey that the focus should be on issues affecting the future economic prosperity and political stability of Hong Kong - but that this must be considered against the background of wider interests in the area. Any suggestions for the title, or the "boundary conditions" that we might indicate for the discussion, would be

most welcome.

The other three principal items will address, first, the political/economic issues of the international trading and financial systems, especially after the Bubble in Japan and the post-Maastricht upheavals in Europe; second, the political/security issues in Europe and Asia after the Cold War; and third, the problems of our respective changing domestic political, social and industrial structures as we move from the excesses and successes - of the 1980's, through the confusion of the early nineties to what presently seems an uncertain future.

We shall, of course, also have the usual presentations on "how things are" in Britain and Europe, and in Japan and Asia; and on bilateral issues, for which, following the great cultural success of the Japan Festival, the flavour of the year is "intellectual exchanges".
