When then Prime Minister Kaifu met with Chinese Prime Minister Li Peng in Beijing in August last year, when Prime Minister Miyazawa met with General-Secretary Jiang Zemin in Tokyo in April this year and on many other occasions, the Japanese side emphasized the importance of preserving the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong beyond 1997 and also stressed the importance of the new airport project. Japan and Great Britain also regularly talk about Hong Kong. As recently as 22nd of this month, Foreign Minister Watanabe and British Foreign Secretary Hurd talked about Hong Kong in

New York.

Japanese private companies also are committed to the way of life in Hong Kong. They have got deeply involved in a large number of projects
