released the official version of the massacre, showing tanks, acts of arson, people being killed and shooting or mobs throwing stones. That was our first sight of the situation. After the screening, the cadres were not confident enough to ask us to show our attitude. Since we had been yelling and shouting anti-CCP slogans throughout the screening.
Even the cadres opposed the bloody suppression. I said to them, "Many people were killed during the Mao's days." and they re- plied "They shouldn't kill people during peaceful times". During that period we held our own discussion by shouting through win- dows while the cadres had theirs in their office.
The prison did not tighten any measure after June 4th neither physical nor particular torture. It is believed that they afraid word would get to the UN and cause a strong response. However, solitary confinement itself is already very inhumane. I therefore believe that no matter what I say or do after my release it will cause no harm to Wang Xi-zhe and others.
During that ten years I was imprisoned my parents visited me eight times. The first time was at Guangzhou Detention Centre just after I was sentenced. After that they came almost every six months. This was simply because they were too busy.
According to instructions at Meizhou Prison any letter written by prisoners should mention a lot about their reform. But I ignored this and only mentioned family business. Because of this most of the letters were held and my family could only received one or two letters in a year. The system in Huaiji Prison was much
better. We could send out and receive one letter every month. All the letters were censored but reform details were not compulsory.
A few months before my release, the head of the prison's politi- cal department told me that the papers for my exit permit had already handed in. But some time later, he said that the senior wanted to observe my performance I might have to stay-to-be- employed' (liu chang jiu ye).
I had already forgotten the exact day of when my sentence would finish. It was not until 24th December 1991 that I learned my release was imminent. The ke zhang announced my release certifi- cate on the Christmas day which did not mention my deprived political rights for three years. They said that it had been deleted, otherwise it was impossible for me to leave the country.
On December 26th 1991, they used my money to hire a car which brought me to the main road. From there I continued my journey like ordinary passengers to Guangzhou.
