led to a two storey office building for the cadres who managed The cells were about two metres times three metres with a light well of similar size in between. The light well, which we could freely enter, had a barred ceiling, toilet bowl and wash basin. There were windows at both ends of the cells through which we could see the opposite cells. In each cell there was a bed, a desk and stool, magazines and books and some stationary. In the day-time there was plenty of light, but in the evening the only light came from a 30 watt bulb. The light improved later when I managed to get a 100 watt bulb. In such an isolated environment, which the cadres seldom patrolled, it was easy for prisoners to commit suicide if they wanted to, there was no one to stop them.
Other political prisoners
Zheng Yin-wu was from Hainan Island. He was accused of organising counter-revolutionary group and organisation in 1986 and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Zheng said the organisation had a membership of five to six hundred.
He Qui who was arrested about the same time with Wang Xi-zhe looked so passive and quiet in the prison. It seems, in this case, refer, was successful. I have not heard from him since he was released nine months ago.
Wang Xi-zhe was arrested in 1981 and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. His physical condition is very bad. He has been suffering from heart disease and nasal problems. He requested a medical check up
many times but was ignored. His mental condition is even worse and is so emotional. A few months before I was re- leased, they installed CCTV, bugging devices and speakers in all the cells.
I believe that this kind of modification should not limited to Huaiji Prison, but maybe a nation-wide operation. After the installation, we got strong electric shock simply from leaning against the wall, so we were constantly exposed to high frequency radiation. This was not only harmful to our health but might cause mental tension, neurosis or even cancer given long-term exposure.
When we returned to our cells after the modification, the cadres broadcasted popular Cantonese songs in high volume all day. Wang cried that he could not stand and he was about to go mad. He complained why there is not any relief on his sentence and why we are being tortured.
His feeble condition maybe the result of long-term imprisonment and the fact that He Qui, who was arrested almost at the same time, had been released. I was about to be release so he felt so isolated.
