GOVERNOR-DESIGNATE OF HONG KONG: SUPPORT STAFF

The Governor-Designate to Hong Kong plans to appoint two personal advisers to the Government House staff in Hong Kong.

The first is Mr Martin Dinham, a career civil servant who was Private Secretary to Mr Patten for a part of the time when he was Minister for Overseas Development (1986-89). Mr Dinham is 41 years old, married with two children, and is at present Head of the South East Asia Development Division in Bangkok.

The second is Mr Edward Llewellyn. He is 26 years old, unmarried and works at present in the Conservative Party's Research Department.

Mr Patten has no further appointments in mind at present.

SUPPLEMENTARIES

What will the two advisers do?

They will serve as personal advisers to Mr Patten and work from the Private Office in Government House. Their detailed role will be discussed with the Chief Secretary and Government House staff after Mr Patten has arrived in Hong Kong.

Will the role of the Chief Secretary be affected?

The Governor-Designate has no plans to change the role of the Chief Secretary or indeed any part of the structure of the Hong Kong Government.

What about a political adviser/senior diplomat?

There is a political adviser already in Hong Kong. Mr Patten has no plans other than announced today.
