The release of Lau Shan-ching and proposed legislation concerning children left unattended at home were major topics of discussion among the 23 callers to R-1's "Talkabout" yesterday (Monday).

Three callers praised Lay Shan-ching for his unfailing commitment to the democracy cause. One of them expressed understanding for his admission of wrong-doing on one occasion, saying that it would not mar his image as a fighter for democracy. Another caller hoped that Mr Lau would continue to participate in pro-democracy campaigns.

One caller, however, ridiculed Mr Lau for failing to criticise the Chinese Government immediately after his release in Guangzhou. The grievances suffered in jail as revealed on his return to HK, he said, might have been made under the influence of the HK Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China.

A caller said that Mr Lau should stop taking part in any democracy movement in China, saying that HK people should not interfere with China's politics. She warned that HK people would run the risk of losing their own freedom by offending China.

Whether legislation should be introduced to prevent parents from leaving children unattended at home prompted a heated debate among six callers.

Three callers insisted that parents should not evade their responsibility for their children. They believed that legislative measures would be most effective in preventing tragedies at home.

The other three callers, however, said that the proposal was unfair to working parents. Two of them believed that education and publicity about home safety would work better than legislation.
