EXCURSIONS AND EXPEDITIONS

The school tries very hard to use the Hong Kong environment to assist its teaching. Field trips take place regularly in many subjects, such as, Biology, History and Geography, and students make formal camps in the New Territories in their First and Second years. In addition to this the school has a marvellous record for making overseas expeditions. Every year the Lower Sixth form trek in Nepal and students from all years Ski in Japan. The school has played Hockey in California, Skiied in New Zealand, played Rugby in many Asian countries and Scuba Dived in the Philippines. In recent years a Trans- Siberian Railway expedition has provided education and entertainment for our students, as has the Peoples Republic of China which is visited on several occasions each academic year. The opportunity to travel, away from families but under the care of staff is an excellent one which the school fully encourages.

ISLAND SCHOOL AND THE COMMUNITY

It has always been an aim of the school to make itself part of the community. This is done in obvious ways by the School Fair, the Open Day and the work that the individual Houses do for local charitable foundations. The school reaches out to the community in many ways; the Island School Sports Club offers use of the sports hall and swimming pool to members of the public after school, at weekends and during the Summer holidays. The Island School Evening Institute has for many years run classes in a wide variety of subjects and has successfully offered educational opportunities to the wider community in a range of subjects, from those examinable at GCE 'A' level to more traditional extra-mural courses. On Saturday mornings the Island School Junior Institute offers, mainly to primary school children the use of specialist rooms and specialist teachers in areas of the curriculum not always covered by their own schools. In the Summer holidays the Island School Summer School offers relaxation and education to many students who do not attend the school during term time.
