ISLAND SCHOOL

Island School is an international, co- educational school, providing secondary education for children of all races who cannot, for reasons of background or language, benefit from the schools provided for the Cantonese speaking majority. The education is similar to that provided by day schools in Britain and the medium of instruction is English. Like all schools in the liberal tradition of English education, Island School has as its aim the development of the talents of all its students; intellectual, academic, imaginative, physical, moral and social. Since we impose no academic barriers on entrance we cater for a wide range of intellect, neglecting neither the high- flier nor the plodder, for the high-flier as much as the plodder needs imaginative and thoughtful teaching. We value all abilities from the sporting to the social, from the artistic to the academic and from the serious to the light-hearted.

The school has over 30 nationalities and our ideal is that students from all over the world work alongside one another in harmony and mutual respect, benefitting greatly from the richness of our cultural and ethnic diversity.

The school is situated on a pleasant site on the hillside overlooking Victoria Harbour. It is managed by the English Schools Foundation which was formed in 1967 to bring together all people in the community who have an interest in schools like Island School. The ESF runs four secondary schools, nine primary schools and the Jockey Club Sarah Roe Centre for children with profound learning or physical disabilities. The Foundation's schools are known throughout the English educational world and the Principal of Island School has the honour of being a member of the Headmasters' Conference, a membership extended to few overseas schools in the English speaking world.

The day to day running of the school is supervised by the Island School Council on which are representatives of the English Schools Foundation, the Island School Parent-Teacher Association, the staff of the school and various co-opted members representing the community at large. The Principal of the school acts as the Secretary of the Council.
