1987-88.

Organised а major study of the financial sector of Bangladesh (Commission on Money, Credit and Banking), and adopted recommendations for strengthening the role of commercial banks and of the monetary policy instruments for helping the growth of the private sector with greater flow of savings and investments.

Initiated the proposal with donors for channelling technical assistance to the private sector.

Piloted Government of Bangladesh's decision to join MIGA.

Took

inter alia, the following measures for strengthening the anti- poverty efforts of the Government:

Adopted policy decision to provide Government of Bangladesh resources for expanding the Eood for Work programmë, in support of WFP and other donor efforts.

Took active role in converting the Grameen Bank into a financial institution

and in enacting legislation for this purpose, to provide active Government support for helping rural disadvantaged women in improving their living conditions.

Tuuk initiative and piloted statutory and administrative measures for converting the character of the Grameen Bank into that of an NGO by reducing Government participation in the capital to a minority of 25%, and for increasing the institution's autonomy.

-Initiated a review of the structure and organisation of the co-operative societies to make them more responsive and effective for helping
