I am writing to congratulate you on your appointment as Governor of Hong Kong, and also on the outcome of the two elections, although of course your pleasure will be tinged with sorrow at the loss of Bath.
I would very much like to come to see you before you leave for Hong Kong in relation to our future with HongkongBank.
We believe that a merger of Midland with HSBC is very much in the national interest. It will be a continuing link with the PRC bridging the handover in 1997, while strengthening the City of London as a world financial centre and the financial centre for Europe. I have expressed these sentiments to the Foreign Secretary.
My secretary will be in touch to find a suitable time in your diary. In addition, I am delighted to hear that you may be able to join us once again for one of our evenings at the Covent Garden Proms in June.
