UNIFORM?

Mr Patten, having consulted widely, has decided not to wear ceremonial uniform as Governor of Hong Kong.

TITLE?

Council. Would not expect me to comment beyond that.

POSITION OF PACE OF DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT?

- As Mr Patten made clear, he will wish to consult widely in Hong Kong before forming a view.

Our position is that we shall approach the Chinese on the question of a faster pace when the time is right, and that what is put in place now should be sustainable beyond 1997.
