MEETING THE CHINESE COMMUNITY IN LONDON

As you know, Mr. and Mrs. Patten will meet leading members of the Chinese executive and professional community at Cowley Street on 16 June.
The question arises as to whether they should also meet the traditional Chinese community, i.e. those who came to this country from the New Territories in the 1950s and 1960s to open restaurants.
This is a large, powerful and influential section of the Chinese community and they are anxious to meet Mr. Patten. It may cause adverse comment if he does not do so, especially as he is meeting the executives and professionals.
I therefore recommend that Mr. and Mrs. Patten meet about 100-120 representatives of the traditional Chinese community at a reception at Grafton Street from, say, 4.30 to 6.00 p.m. If Mr. Patten agrees, could you give me a date.
