INTERVIEWER:
Nr. Hurd, should the Chinese regard the appointment of what is a
high-profile career politician to this important post as in any
sense a change in British policy towards Hong Kong?

FORET GN SECRETARY:
No, they should not.
There is absolute continuity of British
policy which is made by the British Government in the interests of
Hong Kong.
INTERVIENER:
But you are clearly raising the profile of Hong Kong.
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
We are and that is because people in Hong Kong have been somewhat worried that in the last five years of British rule we might push
the subject away from us, forget it, and we have answered that by
