April 1992
George Foulkes MP
House of Commons
Thank you for your letter of 16 April about the Governorship of Hong Kong.
I agree that the appointment of the right Governor will
be crucial for the future success of Hong Kong. I do not intend to debate personalities with you. We have taken careful note of the views expressed in Hong Kong, and the Prime Minister and I have discussed the subject with senior members of the Executive and Legislative Councils.
This is a serious issue and deserves to be treated
seriously. Britain has a major political and economic stake in the future prosperity and stability of Hong Kong. We intend to appoint a new Governor with the calibre to uphold Hong Kong's interests and to provide leadership through the uncertain years ahead.
