the efficiency demonstrated by the police in the subsequent arrests of suspects and retrieval of firearms. Many believed that this demonstrated strong police morale and determination to combat crime.

Many respondents supported the provision of 'a danger allowance' to front line police officers, instead of salary increases across-the-board. Some said that the allowance should be granted in relation to the degree of danger that officers were expected to face. Many respondents also urged a strengthening of the police intelligence network, the provision of better equipment and more training in means to deal with serious crime. Some also suggested a rescheduling of duties which would release junior police officers from clerical duties to go on patrol instead.

Respondents in general welcomed the visit of the Commissioner of Police to Beijing to seek closer co-operation between China and Hong Kong in the combat of illegal import of firearms into the territory. They hoped that this would lead to positive and concrete steps being taken early to contain the situation.

They urged that the Government should formulate a comprehensive youth policy. Another suggestion was that the Social Welfare Department should pay more emphasis on family life education and increase the number of social workers to schools.
It was also suggested that more extra-curricular activities be organized to ease the pressure on
school children.
