The Chinese
side will recall that the subject of Adaptation of Laws was discussed at JLG XVIII. It was agreed then that the British side should proceed with the work involved in this exercise.

Efforts have been made to categorise those provisions identified for adaptation into those that could only come into effect at midnight on 30 June 1997 (midnight adaptation) and those that could come into effect before 1997 (non-midnight adaptation). The results of our initial reviews indicated that a large proportion of the adaptations required are midnight ones. The Post Office Ordinance, Cap. 98, is the first of the limited group of ordinances requiring
requiring non-midnight adaptation on which we are ready to consult the Chinese side.

Apart from this proposal on a single ordinance, the British side is also working on a general across-the- board
proposal on the concept of the Crown in relation to land. That proposal, unlike the first adaptation proposal, will involve adaptation of a very large group of ordinances. We envisage that we shall be able to hand over that proposal to the Chinese side later this year.

The Hong Kong Government has also started work on a number of other points identified for adaptation in the reviews SO far completed. Once our views on how these points should be adapted have been formed, they will be presented to the Chinese side for consideration in
the consultation principles agreed between.
