THE QUEEN'S SPEECH ON THE STATE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT AND THE LEGISLATIVE PROGRAMME: POST-ELECTION PROCEDURES

After the General Election, the Government will have to settle very quickly the text of the Queen's Speech on the State Opening of Parliament on 6 May and will have to reach at least preliminary decisions on the content on the legislative programme. The arrangements for this will have to be set in hand over the weekend of Friday 10 April/Sunday 12 April. The timetable will be very tight, particularly with Easter coming so soon after the Election, and you might find it helpful to know in advance what is likely to be involved.

Queen's Speech

We expect that the Prime Minister will appoint a Queen's Speeches and Future Legislation Committee on Friday 10 April or Saturday 11 April, and that the Committee will hold its first meeting on Tuesday 14 April. We aim to circulate to the Committee on Saturday 11 April a draft of the Queen's Speech. This will have been cleared by Departments at official level, and we will aim to collect from Permanent Secretaries any immediate comments their Ministers may have on the parts relating to their Departmental interests before FLG meet.

meet. Subject to the outcome of the FLG meeting a draft will be circulated to Cabinet colleagues for comment and Cabinet discussion as appropriate (probably after Easter).
