Kai Tak Airport: General
5. Kai Tak airport is situated on the eastern side of the Kowloon peninsula. The passenger terminal building, apron cargo and engineering facilities are at the north end of the runway and bounded by built up areas; the runway projects southwards into the sea. A sketch plan of the airport is attached at Annex B. The terminal provides 8 stands served by air bridges: aircraft are handled on the apron.

6. All flights are international. The number of annual terminal passengers is approaching 20 million. There are three Hong Kong based airlines, Cathay Pacific, Dragon Air (in which Cathay Pacific has a 35% share) and Air Hong Kong, which is an all cargo carrier.
7.
The airport supports flights by major European airlines (including Lufthansa, Air France, KLM) United States airlines, (including Northwest Airlines, United Airlines) and regional airlines (including JAL, QANTAS, Singapore Airlines, Thai, Air India, China Air, Philippine Airlines). There are no services by EL AL, and United States airlines and Air India attract the greatest threat.
8. There are three Handling Companies at the airport: Cathay Pacific Airways; Jardine Airport Services Limited (JASL); and International Aviation Services (IAS). British Airways are handled by Jardine Airport Services. There are four service companies: Hong Kong Air Terminal Services (HATS); Swire Air Caterers Ltd (SACL); Lufthansa Service Group (LSG); Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (HACTL); and Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Coy (HAECO). BA cargo is physically handled by HACTL (which is the operator of the single cargo terminal at the airport) and administered by JASL. Their catering is provided by LSG. Security services at the airport are provided by Securair (the only security company at the airport) and by the Hong Kong police who staff external access control points, deploy armed officers in the terminal and provide both orthodox police services and a response to acts of violence at the airport.
9. The airport is served by a single passenger terminal: passengers arrive at ground level and depart at first floor level. Departing passengers, and their cabin baggage, are screened at a number of points where security and immigration staff are deployed, and they do not mix with arriving passenger after being screened.
10. Areas beyond the point of passenger screening in the terminal building are designated restricted areas. The apron and runway (the area enclosed by fences and to which access is controlled by police) are also designated restricted areas. Buildings which straddle the line between public landside areas and restricted areas, such as the cargo terminal, are designated tenant controlled areas: in these areas the tenants are charged to control access to materials which may be placed on aircraft and to restricted areas.
