Mr Bunten, Hong Kong Department
CHINA RELATIONS COMMITTEE
1. Thank you for letting us see this selection of papers from the China Relations Committee in Hong Kong. They have been sending reports of this nature to London for quite some time, and I do not think that we have commented in detail on them. FED, generally pass their copy of these papers on to us as well. In RAD, we are most grateful to Hong Kong for sending this kind of material to London. The continuing series on the major developments in economic relations between Hong Kong and China is particularly valuable. We do not have the resources here to cover this question in such detail, and it is a very useful series to have, not only for its general comments on the state of the Chinese economy, but more particularly, for the way in which the economies of Hong Kong and China continue to interreact.
2. We also find the occasional visit reports from areas of China outside Peking extremely useful. They form a valuable supplement
to the Embassy's efforts to report from the Provinces and cast useful light on what is actually happening on the ground in China.
