the largest source of Hong Kong's imports (37%) and

23.

The

year-on-year growth rate of Hong Kong's

domestic exports to China remained substantial in the third

quarter of 1991, while that of re-exports to China picked

up further. In the first three quarters of 1991, Hong Kong's domestic exports and re-exports to China increased

by 14% and 39% respectively over the same period in 1990.

In the first half of 1991, Hong Kong's domestic exports to

China for satisfying its own demand increased by 23% over

the same period in 1990. Hong Kong's re-exports to China

for this purpose grew even more rapidly, at 32%. This

suggests that the Chinese government has been relaxing its

import control.

In the first half of 1991, Hong Kong's

domestic exports and re-exports to China for outward

processing continued to grow markedly, by 12% and 38%

respectively over the same period in 1990(18).
