The delegation was briefed by Mr HE Guo-sheng, General Manager of

Jiuzhou Port. The main points made are as follows :-

(a) Jiuzhou port is strategically located. It is an important deep-water port

and cargo terminal in South China, specializing in container handling with

an annual throughput capacity of 130,000 T.E.Us.

(b) The construction of the port terminal was completed in 1987 and came

into operation in 1988. The total construction cost amounted to U.S.$

60 million.

(c)

It has a total quay length of 998 m (240 m for passenger transport and

758 m for cargo transport), a water-depth of 8 m and a backup area of 43

hectares.

(d)

As for passenger transport, the port recorded a passenger flow of 1.85 m

in 1991, which is expected to increase to 2.5 m in 1992.

(e) The cargo terminal has complete ancillary facilities catering for freighters
