(d) The terminal has an annual throughput of 2 million tonnes, earning a net
annual profit of over RMB 3 million. With the planned construction of
two 30,000 tonne-capacity berths in the near future, the annual throughput
will be increased to 1 million tonnes.

The delegation was briefed by Mr Chen Ziquan, Vice Director of the
Zhuhai SEZ Planning Commission. Zhuhai has undergone remarkable housing and
infrastructural development. It is 140 km from Guangzhou and is the nearest Pearl
River estuary city to Macau and Hong Kong. Zhuhai is one of the distributing centres
of the Pearl River Delta and also an important port for trading between China, Hong
Kong, Macau and other countries of the world. It has been transformed into a
industrialised town from a traditional fishing port. In 1990, industrial output
accounted for 37% of its total output value. The real term value has increased by 1.3
times as compared with 1989. There are now more than 700 industrial enterprises,
more than half of which are joint ventures between Chinese and overseas investments.
