The delegation was briefed by Mr Bernard LU of the Foreign Affairs
Office on the Urban Development of the City of Zhongshan. Zhongshan city has
embarked on a programme of urban construction with the aim of improving road
traffic and living condition of its residents. The town area has expanded from the
original 4 sq. km. to 12 sq. m. and the total combined area of the town and suburban
districts is now 198 sq. km. A group of new residential development, including Bai
Yuan New Village, Hua Bai New Village and Riverside New Village, has been
completed at a total investment of more than RMB 744 million on a total site of
400,000 sq. m. This has basically met the target of providing accommodation for
each household at an average living space of 6 sq. m. per person.

In order to provide housing for returned overseas Chinese and alleviate
the problem of over-crowded living conditions, the Song Yuan New Village, with a
total of 1416 units in 63 blocks of residential buildings, has just been completed for
