Apart from the above programmes, a plan to expand Rongqi port to
increase the berthing area from 2 berths to 10 berths will be implemented to increase
the annual throughput capacity of the port to 5 million tons.

Adequate power supply is also an important factor for industrial
development. In recent years Foshan has procured new supply with its own projects.
Up to the mid 1991, the installed capacity of the entire region totals 500 000 kw. The
ample supply of electricity and water has greatly improved the investment
environment in the region.

With the planned provision of transport infrastructure and the adequate
provision of water and electricity supply, the development conditions in Foshan will
continue to improve. The disadvantage of Foshan, as compared with Zhongshan and
Zhuhai, is its relatively inland location and lack of deep-water port to accommodate
large ocean-going vessels. It therefore needs to continuously rely on Hong Kong for
transhipment, as well as the continuous outward processing of manufacturing industry
