Other industrial developments in the area also include food processing,

printing, construction material, chemical fertilizer, and clothing. Recently introduced

in the area include toy manufacturing and shoe-making.

The improvement of transport infrastructure in Foshan in the past years

has created an improved environment for investment. River traffic used to be most

important mode of traffic in Foshan but a system of new bridges, highways and

railways constructed in the past years has facilitated road transportation, making

different parts of the region which have been segregated by the river network more

cohesive. Worth mentioning is the Guangzhou-Foshan Highway, the Guangzhou-

Zhanjiang Highway which passes through Foshan, and the Guangzhou-Sanshui

Railway which cross the city and connect with the national railway network.

Foshan has 29 ports for import and export business, one of which is for

passengers and 4 are equipped to handle containers. The most important port is the

container terminal at Rongqi, which was opened in December 1987. Rongqi is located

approximately 30 km south of Foshan City Proper and 7 km south of Shunde Town.

It includes a passenger pier providing three sails daily to Hong Kong. In 1990, it

handled 466 000 passengers, an increase of 22% as compared with that of 1989. Its
