The industrial development strategy in Foshan is mainly to use foreign

funds to rejuvenate old enterprises. With the importation of technological know-how

and capital from Hong Kong, the industries in Foshan has developed steadily and

rapidly. The total industrial output in 1990 is RMB 20.72 billion, more than 10 times

of that in 1978 at 1980 constant price.

Industries in Foshan are basically dominated by manufacturing. The five

main industrial groups are: textiles, electronics, plastics, ceramics and household

electric appliances. Household electric appliances and electronic industries have the

highest rate of development. With the adoption of high technology, the industrial

products have been upgraded and about 20% of the enterprises carry out their

production according to international standards, whilst many of them were capable of

accepting export orders in large quantities. A great variety of products are

manufactured, including television sets, video recorders, photo-electric materials,

refrigerator, electric fans, etc. Also worth mentioning is the 'Shiwan tiles', one of the

Foshan ceramics products. The production of wall and floor tiles in Shiwan District

accounts for some 20% of the total national production. Shiwan has therefore become
