some 6,500 km of highways were built in the 5-year period. Major

highway improvement works included Route 105 (Beijing to Zhuhai) and

Route 107 (Huinan to Shenzhen) which provided essential service in the

transportation of foodstuffs to and from Guangdong;

(f) another major area of improvement was to replace a large number of

ferry crossings with bridges along the tributaries of the Pearl River;

(g)

as regards port development, some 52 new berths were completed during

the past five years, increasing the total throughput by 20 million tonnes;

(h)

on airport development, the Shenzhen Airport would be operational later

this year. It was projected that the existing airport in Guangzhou would

reach saturation by 2000 at which time an additional airport would be

required.

As regards the Eighth Five-year Plan (1991-1995), major planning

proposals include the following :-

(a)

priority would be given to railway development in the eastern parts of

Guangdong. The Guangzhou-Shantou Railway, 480 km in length, will
