Chiwan Port

4.

This multi-purpose port was officially declared by the State Council of

PRC as an open port in May 1984. It covers 220 ha. of land and is developed by a

joint venture company named China Nanshan Development Co. Ltd. (CNDC). The

delegation was met and briefed by the General Manager of the CNDC, Mr Fu Yu-

Ning and his deputy Mr Tian Ru Geng.

At present, the Chiwan Port has 15 berths of various size including two

35,000 ton-class berths and one 50,000 ton-class berth. In 1990, the throughput was

5 million tons. The port provides services mainly for bulk cargo handling, support

for the offshore oil exploration and a limited amount of container handling. However,

plans are in hand to develop further berths specifically designed for container handling

(see plan at Appendix 4).

In September 1991, works started to construct a dedicated railway network

to connect the port with the national railway system. The project is expected to be

completed in 18 months' time.
