Slavery, 1956 ("the Convention") aims to

intensify national and international efforts towards the

abolition of

slavery, the slave trade and institutions and

practices similar to slavery, including debt bondage, servile forms of marraige and the exploitation of children

The Convention was adopted by ล Conference of

Plenipotentiaries convened by

Economic and Social Council

resolution 608 (XXI) of 30 April 1956 and concluded at

Geneva on 7 September 1956. The United Kingdom ratified

Convention on 30 April 1957 and applied it to Hong Kong

on 6 September 1957 (reference at Annex B). Under Article

11, it is open for accession by any State Member of the United Nations or of specialised agency or by any other

State to which an invitation to accede has been addressed

by the Geneva Assembly.
