The
Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness
concluded at New York on 30 August 1961 and entered
into force on 13 December 1975 (text at Annex A).

The Convention provides that a contracting State
shall grant its nationality to a stateless person born in
its territory. Such nationality shall be granted at birth
by Operation of law or upon an application (subject to
certain conditions) being lodged with the appropriate
authority (Article 1(1)-(2)). Notwithstanding the above, a
State and whose
child born in wed lock in the territory of a Contracting
mother has the nationality of that State,
shall acquire that nationality at birth if he would
otherwise be stateless (Article 1(3)). A Contracting State
shall grant its nationality to a stateless person who is
unable (because Of failure to meet the age limit ΟΙ
requirements) to acquire the nationality of the Contracting State where he was born, if the nationality of
one of his parents at the time of his birth was that of the
Contracting State (Article 1(4)).
