Taiwan: Peng Ming-min
As you know, the Chinese tried to get us to stop Peng Ming-min's transit of Hong Kong en route back to Taiwan. They seem more concerned over him than over other prominent Taiwan independence activists. I recall that this was also the case in the 1970s. But I am not sure why: whether it is merely because he is particularly well respected and influential; whether it is because he is a friend of President Lee (as reported in ATTC
Taipei's telno 80 to FCO, 4 November not to Washington); or whether there is some other special reason.
