Dear Viv,
We spoke a little while ago on the subject of a medal for the Royal Hong Kong Regiment on disbandment in September 1995. I am now writing to ask if you could pursue the matter formally through your channels to determine whether the award of such a medal would be possible.
My initial thoughts are that the medals, which would be worn in uniform, would be awarded to all those officers and members of the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) who were
on the active and reserve list of the Regiment at the time of disbandment. This is currently planned for September 1995. As you may know the Regiment has a history dating back to 1854 and as far as I know is the last locally raised regiment organised along British Army lines and staffed by a British Army Loan Service Team which exists anywhere in the world. I believe it would be a particularly appropriate occasion for the award of such a medal and certainly it would mean an enormous amount to those Volunteers still in the Regiment at the time. It is not envisaged that it would be awarded Respectively to anyone who had served in the Regiment but had left
the active or reserve list prior to disbandment.
I would be grateful if you could take action on this matter
on our behalf and let me know if you think there are any other
avenues which I should explore, or if there is any other information which you need to support our case.
