As the tenure of each scholarship normally lasts 2 to 3 the expenditure on the awards is cumulative.
A substantial sum of the annual contributions in the first two years remained unspent and was carried forward to future years. £265691 has been brought forward to the account of 1991-92. In view of this,
this, the UK/HK Scholarships Committee has decided at its 1991-92 selection exercise to award 12 scholarships to better utilise the balance of funds.
7.
The Committee has also raised the question of the future of the Scheme. Having regard to the objectives of the Scheme, Members see no reason for its abolition upon the transfer of sovereignty in 1997 as this would continue to benefit the young people of Hong Kong in giving them the opportunity to broaden their horizon through overseas studies.
