The Charity Commissioners are appointed under the Charities Act 1960 principally to further the work of charities in England and Wales by giving advice and information, and by investigating and checking abuses.

In particular the Commissioners: maintain a register of charities; make schemes and orders to modernize the purposes and administrative machinery of charities and to give trustees additional powers;

give consent to land transactions; and
