1. The CBI Scholarships Board, on which the FCO is represented by the Joint Directorate, will meet in July to consider which countries should be invited to propose candidates for participation in the CBI Scholarships Scheme in 1993/94. Scholarships offered under this scheme are intended to provide "on-the-job" experience for engineering graduates from overseas, by placing them with British companies for a period of training of between four and eighteen months. The scheme is funded by the DTI and UK industry on an approximately equal basis.

2.

I attach a copy of the CBI's list of proposals for 1993/94, which is based on response and results over recent years. The list also gives, for comparison, details of offers and awards made in 1990/91 and offers made for 1992/93. The 1993/94 list is by no means exclusive and suitable candidates can be considered from other countries, especially if there are strong reasons, preferably commercial ones, for doing so.

3. CBI have asked for FCO comments on their proposed list of recipient countries and the number of scholarships they intend to offer in each case. They would like our views by the end of June in advance of the Board's meeting. Please could you let me have your comments by Wednesday 24 June at the latest. Nil returns are not required.
