I very much admire the skills and enterprise of the business
community in Hong Kong, and the enormous success they have made of forging links with China. But, it is China's strident public
campaign, not the proposals themselves, which has led to increase in the business community. I share the views expressed
by Lord Archer of Sandford when he said in winding up the Lords'
debate for the Opposition on 9 December:
"We will not be intimidated by commercial or political threats
into renouncing our responsibility to safeguard the legitimate interests of the people of Hong Kong."
