IN ADDITION TO CATHAY'S ENORMOUS IMPORTANCE TO ROLLS ROYCE (PERHAPS MORE THAN ANY OTHER AIRLINE: CERTAINLY THEY ARE MORE LOYAL TO ROLLS ROYCE THAN BRITISH AIRWAYS) THEY ALSO PUT FAR MORE BRITISH EQUIPMENT ON TO MOST OF THEIR AIRCRAFT THAN ANY OTHER AIRLINE. THEIR 747'S FOR EXAMPLE HAVE BRITISH MADE SEATS, GALLEY'S, TOILETS, CARPETS, WIND SHIELDS AND BLANKETS, TO THE POINT WHERE APPROXIMATELY US DOLLARS 40-50 MILLION OUT OF THE TOTAL COST OF APPROXIMATELY US DOLLARS 120 MILLION FOR EACH BOEING 747 GOES TO UK COMPANIES. THIS IS ALL A REQUIREMENTS THEY PLACE ON BOEING, AND AGAIN THESE ORDERS DO NOT SHOW UP IN THE TRADE FIGURES TO HONG KONG SINCE THEY ARE FIRST DELIVERED TO THE UNITED STATES, BUT THEY ARE ALL ORDERS PLACED FROM HERE.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS ORDER TO UK BUSINESS IS THUS IN EXCESS OF ITS NOT INCONSIDERABLE FINANCIAL VALUE. I HOPE MINISTERS WILL FIND IT POSSIBLE TO THANK SIR ADRIAN SWIRE AND SIR JOHN SWIRE PERSONALLY. A LETTER OR MESSAGE TO BOTH THE RETIRING CHAIRMAN OF JOHN SWIRE HONG KONG AND CHAIRMAN OF CATHAY PACIFIC, DAVID GLEDHILL, WHO WILL BE GIVING UP THESE POSITIONS NEXT MONTH ON RETIREMENT, AND TO PETER SUTCH, THE CURRENT MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CATHAY PACIFIC WHO WILL REPLACE GLEDHILL AS BOTH CHAIRMAN OF THE AIRLINE AND CHAIRMAN OF JOHN SWIRE HONG KONG, WOULD ALSO I AM SURE BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AND WOULD ENCOURAGE THE PLACING OF FUTURE BUSINESS.
