CALL BY JOSEPH YAM, DIRECTOR OFFICE OF THE EXCHANGE FUND
1. Joseph Yam, Director of the Office of the Exchange Fund,
will call on Mr Burns at 1630 hours on 15 April.
Mr Broadbent, Mr Cox and I will also attend.
2.
Mr Yam was not in Hong Kong when Mr Burns and team visited there at the beginning of April. This therefore presents a good opportunity to have discussions with him in areas of mutal interest and to bring him up to speed on what
was discussed in Hong Kong. I suggest the areas that we
could usefully tackle at the meeting are:
-
briefly, to go through relevant aspects of the visit to Hong Kong, to say how useful this was, and to hope that we
can sustain the dialogue.
-
to discuss the position of the Bank of China, given
developments on the Hong Kong Bank. How far and how fast do Hong Kong see the Bank of China taking a more prominent
2
role. Hong Kong have already conceded note issue and,
to
effectively, a seat on the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee (which we would have to agree). What other areas could BoC take a helpful and legitimate role in?
