Sir Peter Walters was born in Birmingham in 1931.

He was

educated at King Edward's School and graduated from Birmingham University in 1952. After military service, he joined BP in 1954. He spent two periods in New York (1960 - 1962 and

1965 1967) as vice-president of BP North America.

He was subsequently appointed General Manager of the company's

Supply and Development Department and in 1971 became Regional Director for the Western Hemisphere, Australasia and Far East. He was appointed Managing Director in February 1973 and Deputy Chairman in January 1960, with responsibility for chemicals, oil supply, shipping and personnel. He was appointed Chairman

in November 1981 and retired in March 1990.

Sir Peter has held a number of external appointments, including Dizeczor of National Westminster Bank (1981-89), President of

the Institute of Manpower Studies (1980-86), and board member

(1983-90) and Chairman (1985-87) of the International

Management Instituta, Geneva.

Six Peter is currently a Director of SmithKline Seechan and is

Deputy Chairman of Thorn EMI and non-Executive Chairman of Blue

Circle Industries. In 1991 Sir Peter was appointed Vice-

President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.

He joined the board of Midland Group on 5 March 1991 as

Vice-Chairman and became Chaiman or 14 June of the same year.

Sir Peter was knighted in the 1984 New Year's Honours List. He

is married and has two sons and a daughter.
