(b) If (as I suspect) the Hong Kong authorities will be
unwilling to move down the Monetary Authority route, are they giving any consideration to encouraging the Chinese to take a stake in HSBC (eg through buying into the Hang Seng Bank)? We have had hints from the Bank of England that this would heed their regulatory concerns about HSBC risk. It would be interesting to know the FS's views on that.
