experience of public expenditure planning and control both in the☛ and elsewhere, and would be able to give you the
benefit of this. The Treasury might also be able to make available a more junior official with some economic expertise
relevant to the issues in which you are interested.
There is no need to respond to this now, as we can discuss it in the course of your visit. But if you have any immediate reaction, either way, it would be helpful to know because we
could then get on with taking matters forward or thinking of
an alternative.
If two people were involved, I do not think you would need to worry about the extra cost. The Treasury are conscious of
having made a commitment to help, and would, I think, be willing to make up the difference if you thought that would be
useful.
My own advice would be that Sir J Anson would be a good catch for you, so long as you do not think he would be too high profile. I believe that there are precedents for getting
distinguished retired officials to do this sort of thing on a low-key basis. In any event, if you have further queries we
can discuss them. We shall also need to clarify exactly what
you would like to be covered.
