Dear Hamen

VISIT OF SIR JOHN ANSON

1.

la

24/

Thank you for your faxed letter of 2 July setting out the revised terms of reference for John Anson's visit. He is content with this, and is looking forward to spending the week beginning 26 October in Hong Kong.

2. I note that K Y Yeung will be writing with information about payment and the tax situation.

We discussed HM Treasury's offer to provide somebody to assist. One of the reasons for the delay in responding to your letter - for which I apologise is that they were hoping to clarify who would be available, as there was some doubt about the availability of the person they had in mind. This has not yet been resolved, but they have confirmed that they will provide somebody if required. John Anson himself is very keen to have this assistance, because he thinks he will be able to do a better job for you with it. However, this is ultimately a matter for you to decide. It would be helpful if you could confirm that we should go ahead and take up this offer.

4.

I shall be on leave during August, but I am making arrangements for anything urgent which arises meanwhile to be dealt with. It looks as though I shall be in Japan in the second week of September, so I am thinking of spending a day in Hong Kong possibly 14 September. I will be in touch when this is clearer, but I hope there will be the opportunity to see you and colleagues then.
